PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION

Taking the first step toward psychiatric care can bring up a lot of questions. At Ubuntu Psychotherapy Group, your first visit is a chance to tell us what’s been going on, ask questions, and understand your options. You don’t need to know what to call your symptoms or whether you want medication before you reach out.

During the evaluation, your psychiatric provider will ask about what you’ve been experiencing, when it started, and how it affects your daily life. You may talk about changes in mood, sleep, energy, appetite, or concentration, as well as how things are going at home, at work, or at school. Your provider will also review your medical and mental health history, current medications and supplements, and any treatments you’ve tried, including what helped and what didn’t.

Together, you’ll discuss what may be contributing to your symptoms and what kind of support makes sense for you. If medication is an option, your provider will explain why they’re recommending it, what you might expect, possible side effects, and how follow-up would work. Your care plan may also include therapy, coordination with your current providers with your permission, or further evaluation if more information is needed. You don’t have to decide about medication at your first visit.

Preparing for your appointment: If you can, bring a list of your current medications and supplements, any relevant records you already have, and the questions you’d like to ask. It can also help to think about one change you’d like to see in your day-to-day life.

Initial psychiatric evaluations are available in person or by telehealth, when appropriate. Contact our intake team to ask about availability and insurance or to request an appointment.
